Dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) normally requires cutting out and disposing of defective timbers and chemical treatment to adjacent areas to eradicate fungal growth.

Where masonry is affected, irrigation to the walls may be required.

Irrigation is the term used to describe the eradication of Dry Rot from masonry and involves drilling the masonry and injecting a fungicidal preservative. The adjacent area may also require sterilising with a fungicide to eradicate any fungal spores.

Wet rot treatment is usually less expensive to eradicate than Dry rot as eradication of fungal growth is much more simple and does not normally require chemical treatment. Eradication of moisture sources, promoting a dry environment and timber replacement will still be required however.

Damp Proofing Italias Cementicious Tanking Systems

Sovereign cementicious tanking is often the preferred method, as this provides a solid wall finish, consistent with other areas of the property and does not normally require additional drainage or sump pumps to be installed and maintained. Sovereign tanking system provides a reliable, effective method of damp proofing below ground areas.The system is ideally suited to masonry structures and basements often found in older properties.

Treatment involves removal of the existing wall plaster and paint etc., in order to provide a sound substrate to receive the waterproofing system. Sovereign multicoat tanking slurry is then applied to the brickwork or basecoat by either brush, low pressure spray or trowel, depending on the particular project.

Following the application of Sovereign waterproofing products to the substrate, the walls are re-plastered using Sovereign Premix waterproof rendering system, incorporating salt inhibiters to combat the effects of ground salts in the masonry. The walls are then skimmed with plaster to provide a smooth finish.

Complete systems may include a new waterproof floor screed in conjunction with treatment to  the walls. Sovereign Structural waterproofing system is ideal for use on basement rooms and underground vaults.

A new damp proof course will prevent moisture rising into the walls, however rising dampness brings soluble salts into the brickwork and wall plaster, which are hygroscopic. The effect of the hygroscopic salts prevents the wall plaster from drying out effectively and therefore replacement with a salt retardant render, such as Sovereign Waterproof Rendering System, is essential, in order to provide a dry internal finish.

Sovereign premix waterproof rendering system is factory produced and consists of specially blended dried sands, cement, lime, aggregates and additives, along with polypropylene fibres to reduce shrinkage. These are weighed and mixed under a computer controlled system with rigorous quality control procedures.

Where high ground levels exist, Sovereign structural waterproofing or Sovereign tanking may also be required in conjunction with the chemical damp proofing. Typically, treatment involves removal of the skirting boards and wall plaster on the walls to be treated. The wall plaster is removed to a height of approximately one metre, however depending on the salts within the masonry and several other factors, the height of the necessary re-plastering may be increased and will be individually specified once our surveyor has carried out an inspection of your property. Re-plastering above one metre high is not uncommon.

The damp proof course is installed into the walls by pattern drilling the masonry at the base of the wall and injecting a specially formulated solution of Sovereign injection fluid, until the entire depth of the wall is fully impregnated.

The walls are then re-plastered using Sovereign premix waterproof rendering system, which is purpose designed to provide a salt retardant, waterproof render to combat the effects of the ground salts in the masonry and provide a dry internal finish.

Structural waterproofing is normally carried out in conjunction with chemical damp proofing. The chemical damp proof course is installed above the external ground level and the masonry below is waterproofed using a cementicious compound which is designed to withstanding the water pressure adjacent and prevent the passage of water.

Effective structural waterproofing requires the brickwork to be suitably prepared by removal of existing paints and plaster etc., from the walls to be treated.
